Colby’s Freshwater Fish

I’m Back!

Hey all! Sorry it’s been months since I posted anything on this blog. I’ve been way too busy in school. I am hopeful that I will be able to post often once again on this blog now. If not, I will whenever I can. :). Thanks for having me back guys!

Special delivery #2. Just got about 40 new platys to add to my fry tank! :)

Congrats to Veinsrunempty and Ergonomiczombie for guessing the hiding spot of my Otto. :) it’s under this little abalone shell. This shows that even if you don’t have an ornament, feel free to improvise! Even just propping up a rock against something would be good! Heres a pic of my Otto proudly eating outside of his Otto home. :) happy fish keeping!

Even in small tanks you need an algae eater of some sorts. And when you have one you need to provide a hiding spot for it. I have an Otto in my 10 gallon breeder tank. The first one to guess where in this picture it hides will get a promotion! :).

Anonymous asked: what do you do with all of your fry? do you sell them or use them as food for your other fish or something else? Also, do you have any problems with your betta being aggressive towards any of your other fish? thanks

Hey thanks for the question. My fry are all pineapple platys. I have just recently started breeding them with the intention of raising them. Sometimes when I end up with semi aggressive fish in my 30 gallon, I give them a treat every once in a while so I’ll throw one or two very young ones in there. However, my main intention is to raise them to sell. It is a long process usually and it takes patience. Most fish stores will buy them for about a dollar a piece once they reach 1”, which is pretty good seeing that right now I have about 60-70 of them. I’m planning on using the money from selling these fish to support my hobby of keeping fish, which I thought would be a great way to have a self sustaining hobby.
Now as far as the betta goes. I’ve had quite a few bettas in my day and I will only say that they all have their own personality. I have had some that get along fine with all of my other fish and one that even schooled with my neons sometimes! They sometimes don’t get along but the worst thing that happens, assuming you have a community tank, is the betta will flare it’s fins in an aggressive manner. I have never had an experience with a betta actually fighting with any other fish. Now, if you have any semi aggressive fish in your tank (barbs, blind cave tetras, etc.), they will pick at the bettas fins and could kill it due to infection or inability to swim. I hope this answered your questions. Happy fish keeping!

My little albino catfish in the 10 gallon breeding tank! :). This is also to show some of the ornaments that you can use just out of household items! :) I used a pepsi bottle and just set it in there. Sometimes fish go in there to poke around then come back out. However if you have a betta I don’t recommend it because it can take a few minutes for them to find their way out and you don’t want your betta to drown. Happy fish keeping! :)
